About Mr. Cotter

Mr. Cotter received his bachelor degree from the University of Northern Colorado in 1999 and a master's degree from the University of Colorado in 2001. In 2005, he received his J.D. from Gonzaga University School of Law. During law school, Mr. Cotter clerked for the Honorable Gregory D. Sypolt of the Spokane County Superior Court, as well as two Spokane law firms that focused on insurance defense and personal injury.
After graduating law school, Mr. Cotter went to work for Blaine County as a deputy county attorney. Mr. Cotter represented Blaine County in both civil and criminal matters, including contract law, tax law, property law, and he successfully prosecuted a wide variety of misdemeanor and felony criminal cases.
In 2006, Mr. Cotter moved to Polson to work for the
Montana State Public Defender's Office. Here, Mr. Cotter
spent countless hours in the courtroom fighting for his
clients. He has represented hundreds of clients charged with
various criminal offenses, ranging from the common DUI to
negligent and deliberate homicide. Mr. Cotter received the 2008 Excellence Award from the
Office of the State Public Defender for professional
excellence and dedication to the public defender's office.
Mr. Cotter's private practice focuses on criminal defense
and civil litigation. Mr. Cotter welcomes the opportunity to
represent clients in all legal arenas. He is licensed to
practice law in all Montana state courts, the United States
District Court for the District of Montana, and the
Confederated Salish and Kootenai tribal court.
